about

Recorded October 6 - 28, 2020 at ORBS by Daniel Glascock.

All sounds were created with the Roland JX-3P keyboard and its little brother the MKS-30 "Planet-S" rack unit.

The JX-3P was a 6 voice polyphonic synthesizer made by the Roland corporation in 1983. Released before and quickly overshadowed by the more sought after Juno-106, the JX-3P was the first keyboard by Roland with early MIDI implementation. It contained an on-board sequencer that would become a common feature on many subsequent keyboards by Roland. In 1984 the MKS-30 was released. It was a rack unit with the same voice architecture as the JX-3P and used the same programmer, the PG-200, while featuring the voice chips of the Juno-106.

1984 was also the first year digital effects were made widely available in stomp box format, and the amount of pedal processors on this recording should not be understated.

Hauntology as a genre has become increasingly enticing in recent years due to retro-futuristic appreciation of vintage and obsolete music and recording technology. There's just something about the magic of these old machines that was perhaps never fully appreciated in their heyday, and now a lost generation can use these devices for their own cathartic ends. In the dystopia we have inherited, here is the beauty of a remembered future that we never could attain...until now.

Thanks to Mike Metz (Thesis Audio, Wichita, KS) for restoring the JX-3P.

Thanks to Allen Coppock (The Synth Spa, Murfreesboro, TN) for restoring the MKS-30.
